About the Item
A rare and sculpturally powerful 18th century Baroque cherub, fully carved in the round and originally conceived as a hanging ecclesiastical sculpture. Retaining its original gilded surface with exceptional, naturally aged patina.
This remarkable Baroque cherub dates from the mid-18th century, circa 1740–1760, and originates from either Southern Germany or Northern Italy, regions renowned for their highly expressive and technically accomplished religious woodcarving.
Carved entirely in the round from solid wood, the figure was originally designed to be suspended, most likely as part of a church interior such as an altar canopy, ceiling composition, or architectural ensemble. The dynamic pose, with gently bent legs, folded hands, and finely carved wings, creates a strong sense of movement and spiritual elevation, giving the impression of a floating angel.
The anatomy is softly and naturally modeled, with rounded forms typical of late Baroque sculpture transitioning toward early Rococo. The expressive face, with half-closed eyes and a subtly open mouth, conveys a serene devotional intensity. The wings are richly detailed with layered feathers and deep carving, reflecting the work of a skilled professional workshop.
The cherub retains its original gilded surface applied over traditional gesso. The surface shows beautiful and authentic age-related wear, including craquelure and areas of exposed ground, resulting in a richly layered patina. There is no evidence of modern overpainting or invasive restoration. The wear follows the contours of the sculpture organically, confirming its authenticity and long liturgical history.
Fully sculpted from all sides, including the back and wing bases, this piece is far rarer than typical wall-mounted examples. The original iron suspension chain is still present and consistent with 18th century ecclesiastical hardware.
With its generous scale, sculptural quality, and untouched surface, this cherub is a museum-worthy example of Baroque religious sculpture and would make a striking statement in a grand interior, stairwell, gallery setting, or refined contemporary space.
