About the Item
18th century reliquary from northern Italy. Giltwood, polychromed and looks to be hand carved from one piece of wood. Mortised thru the base.
A reliquary was used to house a religious relic possibly from a saint or a holy remnant. Could be hair or bone from a saint or martyr, or even dust, pebbles from a Biblical site.
This particular piece was brought back by a soldier who purchased it after WW2. It remained in the family until i purchased it. Its in very good condition with normal chips to the giltwood finish, very minor considering its age.
