About the Item

A rare and highly collectible trompe-l’œil ceramic sculpture by Canadian artist Michael Harvey, produced in Quebec during the 1970s. Realistically modeled after a crumpled paper bag, this sculptural vase exemplifies Harvey’s ability to transform overlooked, everyday objects into enduring works of art through fired clay. The piece features meticulously rendered folds, creases, and a serrated rim, creating a striking illusion of soft paper despite its solid ceramic construction. Finished in a warm, natural clay tone, the surface retains the original Harvey Craft stamp, confirming its authenticity and origin. The form is both playful and architectural, allowing it to function as a standalone sculptural object while remaining fully functional as a vase. The sculpture is in amazing vintage condition. Minor casting irregularities are visible at some corners, a natural result of the ceramic molding process and typical of these works, adding to the piece’s authenticity and handmade character. There are no cracks or repairs. The vase has been tested for water retention and is completely watertight, suitable for use with fresh or dried floral arrangements. Examples of this model are extremely rare and increasingly difficult to find, particularly in such well-preserved condition. Michael Harvey was born in 1951 in Quebec City and later settled in Montreal, where he studied fine arts at the Université du Québec. For many years, clay was his primary medium, through which he explored form, illusion, and the poetic potential of discarded materials. His artistic philosophy can be summarized in his own words: “I collect what others have thrown out on the street and I present them to you in a different way.” This approach is powerfully embodied in his paper bag sculptures, which elevate the mundane into thoughtful, enduring sculptural forms. A compelling addition to any collection of Pop Art, Postmodern design, or studio ceramics, this piece brings wit, craftsmanship, and conceptual depth to both contemporary and eclectic interiors. Each order is carefully packed and shipped within 24–48 hours to ensure safe and timely delivery.
