About the Item
Alan "Budd" Lewin Missouri (1908-2005). Unique circa 1970s MCM bronze abstract two space alien figures on layered travertine base. Signed Lewin on the back of one sculpture. Budd often spelled Bud, was a local artist, who was well known in the local art scene and Jewish community. He did both large and small scale sculpture, in bronze and stainless. He was in the metals business and had access to foundries, and salvage metals.
Mr. Lewin was born in Kansas City. He left the University of Missouri in 1926 to join his father in the metals business that his grandfather had started -- Lewin Metals, later known as Lewin-Mathes then Cerro Corp., in Sauget. During this time, Mr. Lewin began working with copper, brass, bronze piping and tubing. The company contracted with the Navy to melt down brass from salvage ships.
Mr. Lewin began to collect brass from ships to make lamps, tables and other works of art. In 1954, he made his first chandelier. Unable to find a chandelier for his 20-by-40-foot living room, Mr. Lewin decided to design his own. His earliest chandeliers were made with brass tubing and china cups. His chandeliers hung in dozens of homes in the St. Louis area, as well as in the Governor's Mansion in Jefferson City.
In the 1950s and 1960s, he owned and operated two antiques shops -- the Heirloom Shops -- in Clayton. When he retired in 1975, Mr. Lewin was the head of sales for 52 offices of the family business.
Mr. Lewin then began a career as a full-time artist, creating works at his barn studio in back of his Ladue home. He worked with a variety of materials to make sculptures, chandeliers, table lamps, floor lamps and sconces.
