About the Item

Decorate a study or office with this expressive bronze and marble sculpture titled “Steinklopferhans.” Crafted in Austria circa 1880, the work depicts a jovial stonecutter leaning on a naturalistic marble rock while holding his hammer and pipe. The artisan skillfully rendered the man’s smiling expression, the folds of his clothing, and the lively sense of movement in his stance, all enhanced by a rich patinated bronze finish. The figure is set on its original carved marble base inscribed “Willy Thaller Als. Steinklopferhans.” Willy Thaller (1854–1941) was an Austrian actor and singer from Graz, celebrated for his stage and operatic performances across Vienna, Prague, and the United States. This composition captures the humor and vitality of everyday folk life in 19th-century Austria, blending realism with character study typical of late-century Viennese sculpture. The piece is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with a warm, natural patina to both the metal and marble surfaces. Measures: 8″ W × 6″ D × 16.75″ H.
