About the Item

Decorate a foyer, library, or fireplace mantel with this expressive antique terracotta sculpture, crafted in Belgium circa 1890. The tall, dynamic composition depicts two young boys in rustic clothing, one giving the other a spirited piggyback ride. The figures lean naturally into each other, their postures and facial expressions capturing the tenderness and playfulness of childhood with remarkable realism. Signed G. Van Vaerenbergh and numbered 246 on the base, the work features rich polychrome tones in warm browns and soft beige, highlighting the folds of the garments, the curls of the boys’ hair, and the artist’s expressive modeling. The sculpture remains in excellent condition, with a surface patina that enhances its lively, narrative charm. Gustave Van Vaerenbergh (1873–1927) was a noted Belgian sculptor associated with the late 19th–early 20th century realist tradition. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, he gained recognition for his finely modeled busts of women and his sentimental compositions of children, subjects he approached with sensitivity and gentle humor. His works were exhibited in Belgium and France and are today sought after for their warmth, craftsmanship, and decorative appeal. Dimensions: 9" W x 10" D x 27" H.
