About the Item

19th-Century French Clodion-Style Bronzed Zinc Ewer with Bacchic Caryatid Handle A dramatic and richly modeled 19th-century French Clodion-style ewer, cast in bronzed zinc and conceived as a sculptural decorative object rather than a utilitarian vessel. The form draws directly from the late-18th-century vocabulary popularized by Clodion, whose Bacchic figures and sensuous classical themes were widely revived during the 19th century for grand academic and Second Empire interiors. The handle is formed as a powerful male caryatid or satyr, shown in contrapposto and physically supporting the vessel—an allegory of strength, abundance, and Dionysian excess. The body is richly ornamented with high-relief Bacchic figures, scrolling foliage, theatrical masks, and classical cartouches, all carefully modeled to create depth and shadow beneath the dark bronze patina. Rams’ heads and floral motifs reinforce associations with fertility, sacrifice, and pastoral mythology. Cast zinc allowed for exceptionally crisp detail and scale, while the applied bronze finish provides the visual authority of bronze with a softer, time-worn surface. Objects of this type were intended for mantel, console, or cabinet display, serving as sculptural focal points in Beaux-Arts, Neoclassical Revival, and academic interiors. Dimensions: 23" H x 11" W x 8" D Base diameter: 6" A commanding decorative object with a strong architectural presence and unmistakable classical symbolism.
