About the Item

Decorate a console, mantel, or a woman’s writing desk with this romantic antique bronze composition titled “Le Baiser” (“The Kiss”). Crafted in France circa 1860, the sculpture depicts a gallant gentleman leaning in to kiss a young maiden on the cheek, capturing a tender moment of courtship in exquisite detail. The young woman, dressed in period attire, holds a woven basket while slightly turning toward her suitor with a demure expression, embodying the charm and elegance of 19th-century French romanticism. The sculptural group stands on an integral round base with naturalistic terrain, richly adorned with a deep gilt patina that accentuates the modeling of fabric folds, faces, and textures. Signed in the back, Cordier, and listed in the Benezit (see last picture). Charles Henri Joseph Cordier (1827-1905) was a French sculptor of ethnographic subjects.
