About the Item
Decorate a console, mantel, or buffet with this charming antique pair of French spelter figurines, crafted in France circa 1880 and set on ornate bronze doré bases with pierced scrollwork and paw-form feet. The sculptures depict two spirited young boys captured in playful mid-gesture: one balancing books under his arm while raising his hand above his head, the other engrossed in a toy held between his hands, the thin wire suggesting a taut string.
Both figures are dressed in period 19th-century schoolboy attire with flowing tunics, knotted collars, and detailed boots, emphasizing the lively modeling and expressive movement of each pose. The spelter surfaces retain a warm, patinated finish that contrasts beautifully with the bright gilt bronze mounts below. Cheerful and full of personality, the pair brings a delightful Old World charm to any room and could also be converted into elegant table lamps if desired.

The sculpted figurine is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and adorns a rich patinated finish. Small dent on the dog's back (see last picture).
Victor Rousseau (1865-1954) was a Belgian sculptor and medalist. Rousseau was of Walloon heritage and descended from a line of stonemasons. He began carving stone at age 11, working at the site of the Law Courts of Brussels, designed by architect Joseph Poelaert. He later apprenticed under sculptor Georges Houtstont, and took classes at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels.
A winning competition entry for the Prix Godecharle in 1890 gave Rousseau the chance to travel in England, Italy, and two full years in France, after which he returned to the atelier of Belgian sculptor and teacher Charles van der Stappen...
