About the Item

Decorate a gentleman’s study, library, or office with this rustic antique sculpture from France, circa 1880. Handcrafted in terracotta, the earthenware statue portrays a young farmer in motion, raking and gathering his harvest. The composition is dynamically modeled, with the figure leaning forward against a textured tree trunk, wearing a brimmed hat and rolled sleeves that evoke the realism of rural life in the 19th century. The circular base is finely detailed with a continuous relief of laborers in the fields, emphasizing the artist’s celebration of agrarian virtue and craftsmanship. This pastoral figure is in good condition commensurate with age and use, displaying a warm, rich clay patina. The left arm has been repaired with minor visible scarring, noted for accuracy.
