About the Item

19th Century, Terracotta Italian Sculpture of Venus with a Pearl from Fonderia Chiurazzi After the famous Venus of Capua Her twisted torso, draped in cloth from the waist down, leg bent, she elegantly holds a pearl in her raised hand, adoring it as if it were a mirror. The original sculpture was made during the Hadrian Empire (117 to 138 AD), and was discovered in 1750 at the Amphitheater of Capua, in Capua. The original is housed in the Napoli Acheological Museum in Italy. The sculpture is engraved on the base "Chiurazzi Napoli" The Fonderia Chiurazzi was established in 1840 by Gennaro Chiurazzi senior, and specialized in the reproductions of ancient works from Pompei, Ercolano, Rome, and others found in Italian museums. At the World Exhibition in St. Louis (1900), Chiurazzi recieved great praise and established his reputation as one of the world's best foundries...
