About the Item

This marble sphinx sculpture is executed in the Grand Tour style, reflecting the European fascination with ancient Egyptian and classical antiquity that flourished during the 18th and 19th centuries. The figure presents a serene human head wearing a stylized pharaonic headdress, combined with the body of a reclining lion. Carved in solid marble, the sculpture is intentionally unfinished through the midsection and rear, with visible tool marks and softly blocked forms that contrast with the more refined treatment of the head and forequarters. This interplay between finished and unfinished surfaces evokes the non finito tradition admired in neoclassical and academic sculpture, lending the piece a strong sense of process and artistic authenticity. The sphinx rests in a traditional pose with extended forepaws, offering a balanced and sculptural presence well suited to both classical and contemporary interiors. Its scale makes it ideal as a decorative object while maintaining the gravitas associated with Grand Tour–inspired works.
