About the Item

Italian bronze statue from the first half of the 20th century. A rare and high-quality sculpture depicting the Dying Gaul, one of the most celebrated masterpieces of Hellenistic sculpture. The original artwork was commissioned by Attalos I of Pergamon to celebrate his victory over the Gauls and created by the renowned Greek sculptor Epigonus. It was one of the most famous statues of antiquity and, for this reason, was often reproduced by many artists in later periods. The most important and famous version was discovered in Rome in the 17th century during the excavations of Villa Ludovisi and is now on display in the Capitoline Museums. The sculpture depicts a Galatian warrior wounded in the chest by a sword thrust, semi-reclining and with his face turned downward. The figure, captured in the final moment of life, expresses a composed and noble drama, enhanced by the rendering of the bronze and the refined modeling of the surfaces. An ideal artwork for refined collectors and prestigious settings, capable of combining classicism, expressive power, and symbolic depth. It has some small scratches and signs of age, overall in good condition.
