About the Item

"Achilles and Hector" pair of sculptures in bronze, cast to the lost wax, France, 19th century. In both, the base is the same: raised on four balls and rectangular in shape, it has a front decorated with a central floral motif flanked by two branches of classical inspiration, and a treatment in the upper part that resembles earth. The Achilles' sculpture depicts him with one knee on the floor and the left leg stretched out, drawing an arrow from the tendon of his ankle while looking towards this point. Hector is lying down, leaning his weight on his right arm, while raising his shield. Both are armed, the first with a hull closer to the Roman style and the second with a Greek type. Hector appears defeated, trying to protect himself in vain with the circular shield. Achilles, being higher and drawing with his body a marked diagonal, creates the impression on the viewer to be the victor of this combat that is known to have taken place but is not shown in the work. The appearance in art of these two heroes of the Trojan War was very common since the Renaissance, but acquired a major boost thanks to the discovery of the ruins of the city by Heinrich Schliemann (1822- 1890). Compare, for example, with Filippo Albacini's "Achilles wounded" at Chatsworth House (Derbyshire, UK), or the same theme as the Achilles Gardens at Corfu Palace (Greece), or the sculpture by Innocenzo Fraccaroli of 1842, conserved in the Gallery of Modern Art of the Villa Reale of Milan, or with "Colere d'Achille" of Constant Ambroise Roux (1865-1929), with which it obtained the Prize of Rome of Sculpture in 1894. Although this pair is similar to those mentioned (especially with the last one), certain logical differences are appreciated, because they are small sculptures and, above all, because teir origin is French.
