About the Item
AFTER PRAXITELES Greek c.400-330BCE
The original of this imposing group, was rescued from obscurity in the 16th century and became the basis of numerous copies in bronze, marble and in this case serpentine. This example, which we feel is from the mid-19th century, is brilliantly carved, Whimsically, a goat peers out from the stump, wrapped in vines while the Silenus, chief of the satyrs, cradles the writhing child Bacchus, It is raised on the original octagonal pedestal, which masterfully has been tapered to a square base with canted corners to receive the statue and is carved in high relief with fruiting vines. The entire statue and base is about seven feet high and makes as dramatic a statement of skill and taste as could be hoped for.
The original was recorded as part of the Borgese collection in 1613, whence it was taken by Napoleon to Paris in 1808
A bronze cast of this model was given to Queen Victoria as a present from Albert, the Prince Consort for Christmas in 1847.
