About the Item
Large French Art Deco Silvered-Bronze Lamp Sculpture by Alexandre Kelety, 1920s. Naked Woman – Silverplate Bronze, Alabaster
Marble. This exceptional French Art Deco lamp by Alexandre Kelety (also spelled Keleti/Kelety) is a rare, large-scale silvered-bronze sculpture from the 1920s, featuring a stylized nude female figure supporting an illuminated alabaster globe. It is a quintessential example of French Art Deco lighting, combining elegance, sculptural power, and luxurious materials.
Silverplate bronze figure
Original alabaster globe
Marble base
Old alabaster, unlike contemporary pieces, displays natural veining that can resemble cracks, but these are organic veins inherent to antique stone.
Signed “Kelety” twice: on the bronze collar beneath the globe and on the marble base.
Embedded bronze medallion: “Syndicat des Fabricants de Bronze Unis France 1918”, used until WWII — a guarantee of authentic period production.

Biography — Alexandre Kelety (1893–1961). Hungarian-French Sculptor Art Deco
Alexandre Kelety was born on November 16, 1893, in Budapest and died on August 29, 1961, in Viroflay, France. A major figure of the French Art Deco movement, Kelety worked as a sculptor, painter, and engraver from 1918 to 1940. Today, his bronze and chryselephantine sculptures are highly sought-after on the international art and design market.
After World War I, Kelety emigrated to France, studying first in Toulouse with Hungarian painter-engraver Imre Karoly Simay, then completing his artistic training in Paris. He married Hélène Grün, daughter of Russian-born French painter Maurice Grün.
Artistic Style
Materials
Kelety’s work is characterized by the fluid, elegant forms typical of Art Deco sculpture. He frequently depicted animals, childhood, dancers, and mythological figures. His preferred materials included bronze, ivory, marble, alabaster, and ceramics, and he is especially known for his exquisite chryselephantine statuettes.
Alongside fine sculpture, he created Art Deco functional decorative objects such as electric lamps, ashtrays, and incense burners—making pieces like the lamp above a perfect combination of sculpture and lighting design.
Collaborations
Foundries
Many of Kelety’s finest bronze and bronze-and-ivory pieces were produced by the most important Parisian art editors of the period:
Arthur Goldscheider
Edmond Etling
Les Neveux de Jules Lehmann
M. Ollier (notably his animal figures)
These collaborations firmly place Kelety among the leading sculptors of interwar Parisian decorative arts.
Exhibitions
Kelety regularly exhibited at major Paris salons, including:
1925 – Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes
1926 – Salon de la Société Nationale
1927 – Salon des Artistes Décorateurs, Paris
1928
1930 – Société des Artistes Français
1933 – Salon des Tuileries, Paris
1937 – Exposition Universelle, Paris
Later Activity
In 1939, Kelety advertised drawing classes from his studio at 20 rue Ernest Cresson, Paris, remaining active in the artistic community until the early 1940s.
