About the Item
A patinated bronze sculpture of a seated nude man by Belgian sculptor Alexandre Ouline (1918-1940).
The seated figure, thought to be that of an athlete, resting his chin on his hand in a pensive pose highlighting his muscular body and finer features. Ouline has left this piece with a sense or realism and imagination as he sits deep in thought, perhaps working out his next athletic move.
Signed to the bronze base on which the figure sits, this sculpture is of an excellent quality and subject; the handsome patina and tinos green marble base only highlight and enhance the overall work of the sculpture.
Alexandre Ouline (Active 1918-1940)
Alexandre Ouline was a Belgian impressionist and modern sculptor who went on to become a significant figure in the development of modern art.
Particular famous for his works of athletes, such as this one, panthers and other animals, he was known to be active in France from 1918 to 1940.
Dating to circa 1930, this bronze sculpture is an ode to his influential work.

The Solider of Marathon
Bronze After J. P. Cortot
By Jean Pierre Cortot, F. Barbedienne Foundry
Located in Wormelow, Herefordshire
An excellent large late 19th century antique bronze of ‘Le Soldat De Marathon Annoncant La Victoire’, also known as ‘The Soldier of Marathon Announcing the Victory’, cast by Ferdinand Barbedienne after a model by French sculptor, Jean-Pierre Cortot (1787-1843).
The Barbedienne foundry produced this model in four editions. This bronze is an example of the second largest. Inscribed ‘Cortot 1834’, it is signed ‘F. Barbedienne Fondeur’ and impressed with the official stamp of the Collas et Barbedienne foundry reading: ‘Reduction Mecanique, A. Collas Brevete’.
With its attractive patina and impressive scale, this bronze is a beautiful sculpture for any interior seeking artworks that are particularly exceptional.
The Soldier of Marathon
Inspiration for this bronze is rooted in ancient Greek mythology. It tells the story of the solider Pheidippides who, following the Greek victory at the Battle of Marathon in 490 BCE, ran 40km from Marathon to Athens to deliver the triumphant news before collapsing from exhaustion. The story inspires the modern-day marathon run...
