Allegory of Fishing (La Pêche). Bronze. PEIFFER, AUGUSTE JOSEPH (PARIS, 1832-1879 / 1886). France, 19th century. Signature on the base (PEIFFER). Bronze sculpture cast in lost wax that has a circular base that resembles water and waves, and which supports two ladies dressed in robes waving in the wind in the classicist way. One holds a trident from which fish hang, while the other has two other fish coiled on its forearm. Clothing, aesthetics, playing with the waves, etc. they are identified as allegorical figures of Fishing (note the conches, clothes and wet hair, the aquatic allusions achieved thanks to games with the cloths and postures of the two young women, etc.). This allegorical iconography was very common in Neoclassicism and in nineteenth century art for combining a wide variety of themes and a clear influence of Greek and Roman Antiquity, in addition to allowing numerous themes and readings of them. Thus, and especially in France, there were a large number of artists of great importance specialized in small-sized bronzes for interior decoration. In the present case, we must speak of Auguste Joseph Peiffer, a Parisian sculptor specialized in small bronzes with allegorical and mythological themes, who showed his work at the Paris Salon (2865-1879). Compare this piece with another bronze by this author, usually known as The Hunt or Allegory of the Hunt or Hunting Nymphs, dated the first foundries between 1879 and 1886 (Musée d'Orsay de Paris, etc.), and which is very similar to the present. Many private collections from around the world and institutions such as the Antoine Vivenel de Compiègne Museum, or the Saint-Nicolas-dÀliermont Clock Museum, for example, also hold works by the master.
