Ancient Egyptian Shabti Figure 1292 BC

About the Item

A very fine, rare and well preserved New Kingdom white faience shabti, dating to the 19th Dynasty, circa 1292 - 1187 BC. The figure modelled in beautiful and rare white faience, depicted mummiform with details added in purple-black. She is shown wearing tripartite wig, broad collar, and holding a pair of hoes. A seed basket lies over her left shoulder and a pair of suspended water pots on each arm. The vertical inscribed column on front within linear border reads: Illuminating the Osiris, the mistress of the house, songstress of Amun, Ta-Mert The 'songstress of Amun' was a common title afforded to noble women in the New Kingdom and referred to a role of divine Worship in the temple of Amun. White faience shabties are considerably rarer than their blue and green faience equivalents and are highly sought after on the art market. Provenance: From the Collection of the late Julian Bird (inventory number 1102). Julian Bird was an avid collector of Egyptian Antiquities. His collection was formed from the 1970s onwards, mainly from the UK market. Mr. Bird's notes record that this piece was part of the Tackholm collection. "... A Scandinavian family collection formed between 1890-1940, mostly by Professor Richard Tackholm (1865-1937), who bought pieces in Paris and London around 1900, some from the Hilton-Price collection sold at Sotheby’s London 1911, and others as gifts from friend like Sir William Flinders Petrie. Others were acquired by his relative, a Swedish professor of botany, Vivi Laurent-Tackholm, who studied the flora of Egypt and lived in Cairo 1923-1978. Then inherited by descent via Mrs Elsa Berglunf (1903-1979).
