About the Item

An antique 19th century French bronze sculpture of Cupid and Psyche after a Greco Roman model found found in 1666 on the Caelian Hill in Rome, not far from the church of Santo Stefano Rotondo (St. Stephen in the Round), where during the Imperial period some of the richest and grandest aristocratic residences were to be found, such as the famous house of the Valerii family. The original sculpture was acquired by the Medici family, and among the classical marbles that belonged to their collection, the group of Cupid and Psyche is certainly one of the most renowned and significant. The wealth of copies of this small sculptural group from the Uffizi, made since the beginning of the 18th century bear witness to its becoming a true icon of spiritual love in European culture. This example was was cast in France in the second part of the 19th century and retains its original deep brown patina. The circular marble base is a later addition. The total height, including the marble base is 16.5 inches, the bronze sculpture itself measures 15.75 inches high.
