About the Item
Antique carved Indian ceremonial temple sculpture of a large parade horse from the late 19th or early 20th Century. The wooden body, mane, tail, saddle and reins are carved in high relief with decorative bells and studs along its trappings.
The sculpture is polychrome with a white body and gold, blue-green and red decorative accents. As per age there are hairline cracks and chipped paint with an excellent natural patina. The sculpture is strong and secure with no major missing parts. The horse’s testicles are attached with heavy wire so they swing to emphasize masculinity, power and vitality in keeping with ancient and traditional cultures. Horses are considered to represent speed, perseverance, and success in Vastu Shastra culture. Horse can be mounted in a rearing position.
Origin is India. Regional folk artist is unknown.
