About the Item

Young Girl and Her Spaniel From our sculpture collection, we are delighted to offer this Italians Bronze Group by Lanzirotti. The Italian Bronze stood on an octagonal bronze base with a central group depicting a young girl sat upon a grassy knoll with blossoming flowers pointing towards Madame de Pompadour’s dog mimi as it rears up on its hind legs. Signed A. Lanzirotti, the Italian Bronze dates to the late 19th century circa 1870. Antonio Giovanni Lanzirotti (1839-1921) was born in Palermo on the island of Sicily, Italy. After completing his studies he travelled to Paris, France to work under Joseph Michel Ange Pollet (1814–1870) an established Italian sculptor. His first ever works was named The Education of Bacchus and Lanzirotti exhibited it at the 1855 World Exposition at Paris. Several years later in 1863 he travelled to Turin, Northwest Italy where King Vittorio Emanuele II commissioned statues of the Conte Verde and Duke Vittorio Amedeo I. He sends to Paris, a statue La Pensieroso, now found in London and La Schiava which sold to the museum of Nice. Madame de Pompadour (1721-1764) previously known as Jeanne Antoinette Poisson / Marie Antoinette was a mistress, friend and advisor to Louis XV, remaining with him until her death in 1764. She had two well known dogs named Bébé and Mimi. Bronze is an alloy consisting primarily of copper with approximately 12–12.5% tin and often with the addition of other metals (including aluminium, manganese, nickel, or zinc) and sometimes non-metals, such as phosphorus, or metalloids such as arsenic or silicon depending on the age of the bronze and its origin. The additions of other metals produce a range of alloys that are usually harder than copper alone and carry useful properties such as strength. The earliest known use of bronze dates to the 5th millennium BCE from Iranian plateau, the bronze mix consists of arsenical copper and copper-arsenide. The earliest tin-copper-alloy recovered is dated to circa 4650 BCE and was found in Plocnik, Serbia. It is believed to have been smelted from a natural tin-copper ore.
