About the Item
- Description of the Artwork:
The work "The Lady with Deer" (Madame aux biches), by Menneville (pseudonym for Ugo CIPRIANI: 1887-1960), is an emblematic Art Deco sculpture, created in the 1920s-1930s. It features an elegant woman standing, surrounded by two stylized does (female deer), in a composition that is both poetic and decorative.
The slender woman wears a long, flowing dress with detailed pleats. Her graceful posture, with her gaze averted, expresses serenity and refinement. Her face, sculpted in ivorine or ivory paste, contrasts with the green and gold patina of her dress and the animals. In her hand, she holds an offering or a small animal, reinforcing the symbolic link with nature.
The deer, flanking her on both sides, are rendered with clean lines: one raises its head towards the woman, the other is bowed. Their slender bodies reflect the stylized aesthetic of the era. The entire group rests on a black marble base, which is sober and geometric, typical of Art Deco.
The work embodies elegance, femininity, and harmony with nature. It demonstrates the era's taste for stylized forms, luxurious materials, and the balance between beauty and symbolism. "The Lady with Deer" thus perfectly reflects the refinement of the Art Deco style.
- BIOGRAPHY OF MENNEVILLE (UGO CIPRIANI: 1887-1960):
Ugo Cipriani is an Italian sculptor, born in Florence on August 13, 1887. He comes from a family of artists and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. He quickly embraced the Art Deco movement of the 1920s. He initially worked with marble, alabaster, bronze, and terracotta. In 1919, he created the monumental bust of Guglielmo Oberdan in Florence. In 1935, he emigrated to France to escape the Italian fascist regime. Settled in Paris as a political refugee, he became a very prolific sculptor. It is in France that he most frequently used the pseudonyms Menneville and Uriano. His Art Deco works, often in spelter (art metal) and ivorine, are highly sought after. He died in Paris in 1960, leaving a considerable and varied body of work.

Sculpture Art Deco in Spelter "The Archer" (ca. 1920) by Jean De Rancourt
Located in Ixelles, BE
- The Artwork:
This sculpture by Jean de Roncourt embodies a striking dramatic tension through the figure of an archer in full action. Kneeling, with a taut torso and prominent muscles, the man draws his bow in a gesture of controlled power. The dynamic, almost choreographic posture reveals a perfect knowledge of human anatomy, typical of the Art Deco movement to which de Roncourt belonged. The grey-patinated spelter confers an antique nobility...
