Elegant and powerful French Art Deco sculpture titled Atalante, designed by Jean de Marco (1898–1990) for Max Le Verrier in the 1920s. Though named after the mythic Greek runner, the figure is unmistakably a representation of Diana the Huntress – caught mid-stride with drawn bow, accompanied by a bounding antelope.
Cast in spelter with its original verdigris green patina, the sculpture displays the clean lines, stylized anatomy, and movement typical of French Art Deco. The light sandstone base complements the composition, grounding its visual dynamism in a balanced, architectural form. A bronze bow adds tactile contrast.

Max Le Verrier
Max Le Verrier was born on January 29, 1891, in Neuilly-sur-Seine. He opened his studio in 1919 and won a medal at the famed 1925 Exposition in Paris that gave Art Deco its name. Later, he established a foundry that cast bronze sculptures for Pierre Le Faguays and Marcel Bourain, among others. Although Le Verrier experimented with other alloys, he continued to create pieces in bronze as well. Le Verrier died on June 6, 1973, in Paris.
