About the Item
This dramatic, highly streamlined bronze with a nude male figure angled toward the sky illustrates a genre of Art Deco sculpture that was pioneered by Frederic Focht (this example is after Focht). Entitled "The Aviator," it depicts an angel riding a shooting star, with the roiling sea below. Focht sculpted a number of stunning variations on this theme -- one sculpture shows a male figure holding a long spear, and another has him holding a torch aloft. The artist studied under the sculptor Falguiere and proved to be a prodigy, winning the coveted Medal of Honour at the Salon des Artistes Français when he was only 21. This bronze was sculpted posthumously, probably cast from an older example of the sculpture; thus, its detail is not quite as fine as an original sculpture from the 1920s. The sculpture is mounted on a beautiful slab of veined black marble; it shows the foundry mark.
