"Bacchus and Child with a Panther", Signed "Moreau", France, 19th Century

About the Item

An oval base made of two different types of marble marbles slightly elevates the composition; the figures are made in bronze. On a ground-like base, a panther is seated, turning its head back to bite an object with grapes and leaves of grapevine which the child lies on his back; with one of its claws, holds another object next to the other child, who is lying facing up. The movement of the composition and the combination of two tones in the bronze contribute to enhance the remarkable detail of the figure, made with the lost wax technique. Clusters of grapes and vine leaves are found throughout the sculpture (garlands on the heads, on the ground), adding a Bacchic theme to the work. Dionysus (or Bacchus) is the classical divinity associated with wine and vintage, inspiring the ecstasy and pattern of agriculture and theater. Son of Zeus, usually appears in the art associated to his entourage, called tiaso and formed by maenads and other creatures (satyrs, silenos), and also are a habitual reference the bacanales. He usually shows with a leopard or a panther, and can be recognized by the tirso (cane lined with vine or ivy that sometimes has loops, and is finished in a pine pine) that he carries, as in this figure. The subject of Bacchus child with other figures and a panther was relatively frequent in this type of small figures of bronze in France during century XIX. For example, Claude Michel "Clodion" (1738-Paris, 1814) made a group that was highly appreciated and repeated on numerous occasions, like the work by Auguste Moreau (1834-1917) with two putti and a goat that shows accused movement as in this figure, but which shows a relation between the bodies that also to works by, for example, Charles Raphael Peyre), or the figure of "Bacchus giving to drink to a panther" by Charles Cumberworth (Verdun , 1811- Paris, 1852). In all cases, they are works of extraordinary quality in their details and composition, as is the case with the present figure. Size: 34 x 16 x 28 cms.
