Austrian Patinated White Metal Gnome Figurine, Vienna, Early 20th Century
Charming Austrian figurine depicting a gnome with a wheelbarrow and milk jug, cast in white metal with a warm, deliberately applied patina imitating aged bronze. Discovered at an estate sale in Vienna, this whimsical yet finely modeled object reflects the decorative tastes of the Viennese bourgeoisie in the late 19th to early 20th century.
Such figures were produced as affordable alternatives to true bronze sculptures, allowing middle- and upper-middle-class households to participate in the aesthetic language of historicism and Jugendstil Vienna.
