About the Item

Rare and striking, this porcelain sculpture and night light depicts two Bedouin women swathed in brilliant white robes, framed by gold headbands and a gold floor beneath their feet. The smooth, liquid form of their enrobed forms presents a perfect subject for the stylized approach to the figure that took hold in the 1920s and 30s. This piece was commissioned by Robj, one of France's most prolific retailers of fine figural pieces in the style we call Art Deco today, and was made by the famed Limoges porcelain works. Robj was founded by Jean Born in 1908 ("Robj" is an anagram of his name), but after his death in 1922 the firm was led by Lucien Willemetz, who revolutionized the quality and reach of the firm's products. Willemetz commissioned pieces that were made by Sèvres, Villeroy et Boch, Michelaud Frères and others, but sold under the name of Robj. The piece was designed to contain a soft light within its cavity, serving as a night light for a bedroom.

"Exchange of Cultures, " High Style Art Deco Porcelain Lamp Base w/ Nudes by Robj
By ROBJ
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Illustrated in "Ceramiche Robj" and considered a major design by the renowned sculptor and ceramicist, this large piece was probably made in early 1930s to coincide with the debut of the Exposition Coloniale Internationale in Paris, which attracted almost 9 million visitors in less than a year. Rare and striking, this porcelain table lamp base depicts the globe surmounted by a tightly composed cluster of nude and semi-nude female figures representing cultures around the world. The women depicted here, all glazed in a gorgeous snow-white glaze highlighted in gold, are clearly representing a range of nations in Asia and Africa, probably coinciding with the nations that were part of the French Colonial Empire in the 1930s, before they won their freedom. Much like the one surviving building from the Exposition, now the Cité nationale de l'histoire de l'immigration, which features a massive bas relief mural...

Set of 2 Art Deco Porcelain Figurines Signed Amelin - Rauche / "Limoges France"
Located in Beirut, LB
Art Deco Figurines in Limoges porcelain, featuring a depiction of 2 young women swimmers adorned in a classic bathing suit featuring a more fitted and tailored look compared to the loose and boxy styles of the previous decades. In a playful gesture, a towel is casually draped over the shoulders, its wavy form adding a dynamic element to the scene. Hand-painted with the use of red , white and gold details accenting the dynamism. Initially, Limoges porcelain was made in the style of Meissen porcelain, with elaborate hand-painted designs and gold leaf decoration. However, by the early 19th century...
