About the Item

2018 epoxy on cast bronze by New York City artist, David Bender, entitled 'Birth of Venus Williams.' A conceptual work which manages to be immensely insightful and thought-provoking while maintaining Bender's style of sculptural refinement and elegance. Small in scale, measuring height 11" x diameter 7" The work conveys a social paradigm shift (specifically, an acknowledgement and celebration of women and the reconsideration of the definition of beauty). The central figure emerging from the 'egg' represents a rebirth yielding today's modern woman: one who is more empowered, enlightened, and free from the former confines of traditional beauty. Artist's Statement: When Botticelli painted the Birth of Venus for the Medici family during the Italian Renaissance it was to suggest to the world that there was a new standard of beauty. Six hundred years later, the standard of beauty represented in that art hasn’t changed all that much - just google ‘beautiful woman’ and see what you get. The Birth of Venus Williams challenges what beauty means today. I would like to think that beauty is defined by diversity - it has no ethnic boundaries. It is inclusive - gender does not make for beauty. It is compassionate and loving - real beauty comes from the heart. The narrative continues to shift. - David Bender Artist Info: Awards: Best in Show Award from the Woodstock School of Art Regional Exhibition the Art Times Award from the Hudson Valley Art Association Invitational Brinton Museum (permanent collection) Education: Seattle University Burnley School of Art New York Academy of Art Arts Students League of New York Studio of Michael Aviano Select Exhibitions: Bushwick Open Studios Site:Brooklyn - Curated Mixed Media Dab Art - 'Drink Me', Curated Invitational Children's Museum Of The Arts Auction.

Honorio García Condoy Carved Stone Figurative Sculpture
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Honorio Garcia Condoy (b. Honorio Garcia, 1900, Zaragoza, d. 1953 Madrid) figurative sculpture in carved stone depicting a faceless virgin (ca. 1930s). A contemporary and close friend of Picasso, Condoy drew a lot of inspiration from the shapes and composition of Cubism. Though this particular sculpture is from a body of work heavily influenced by Roman churches and symbolism. The half-standing, half-sitting Virgin, the flat heads, the erased faces - these attributes of Roman art are all present in this piece. The featureless, flat-skulled virgin figure enveloped in a self-embrace is perched in a half-sitting/half-kneeling pose. This piece is from a well-documented series (near identical example is seen on page 91 of Raymond Creuze's "Honorio Condoy"). Unsigned. Excellent, vintage condition with light patina/scattered light scratches, but no damage/losses. H: 37.5" x L: 12 x D: 14" Reference: Raymond Creuze "Honorio Condoy" (French, 1973). Reference book is included with the sculpture. From the collection of a prominent French collector whose London flat...
