The Brighton cup, very large silver and bronze horse racing trophy by Hancocks Co. English, 1869 Measures: Height 82 cm, width 60 cm, depth 42 cm This exceptional piece, magnificently worked in silver and bronze, was made as the trophy for the 1869 Brighton cup, the horse racing event held at Brighton racecourse since the mid-19th century. Standing proud at 82cm in height, the piece radiates a sense of majesty, grandeur and heroism. The trophy was designed by the Italian artist, Raffaele Monti (1818-1881) for Hancocks Co. (the prestigious jeweler, founded by Charles F. Hancock). Monti, who trained under his father in Milan and thereafter in Vienna, moved to London in 1848 and soon became established as one of the leading sculptors of the day. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and made works for leading patrons, such as the Duke of Devonshire. Several of Monti's sculptures, which he executed in various materials including marble, metal and porcelain, can now be found in prominent collections and museums around the world, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. This fantastic work of sculpture is expertly crafted from silver and bronze, with the two materials providing a spectacular contrast. The base of the sculpture is modeled as a rocky mound in patinated bronze, which has a dark and matte appearance. Lighter and reflective silver waves lap around the base and above, a group of figures are depicted in silver, dressed in classical robes and carrying spears and shields. All of the figures are male, with the exception of one female figure, which is shown sitting holding her child. The sculpture depicts a group of men from ancient Britain, preparing to defend their homeland against the forthcoming invasion by the Roman Emperor, Julius Caesar. The attention to detail is second-to-none, and the facial expressions perfectly capture a sense of pride, courage, tension and unnerving focus. The sculpture is marked in several areas with makers mark for Hancocks Co and date mark for 1869. The sculpture sits on a fitted ebonized wooden plinth, with a prominent silver plaque to the front centre reading 'BRIGHTON CUP, 1869'. The plaque features an elaborately decorated border formed of oak branches with leaves and acorns.
