About the Item
Torch-cut brass sculpture of lillies, mounted on a burlwood base, by Gerd Scharrelmann. This elegant sculpture has a delightful kinetic effect. The flowers and stems shiver, producing a delicate rustling sound when disturbed by movement or a breeze. Petals and leaves can be bent and arranged as you please.
Scharrelmann (1932 - 2001), was an American artist working in San Francisco during the 1960s and 1970s. His sculptures sold at Pier 39 pre-commercialisation, and from his own studio 'Sculpture 70'.
He produced small sculptures for domestic decoration, using torch-cut brass, wire and burlwood. This technique was employed by Brutalist sculptors for its simplicity and live-edge effect on materials. The raw materiality of the Brutalist style was popular during the 1960s and 70s resurgence in folk craft and natural finishes, especially for small ornaments and wall decorations, such as those by Curtis Jere and Paul Evans in the US and Stephen Chun in Hong Kong.
This particular sculpture has its roots in the arts of Bonsai and Ikebana, and we suggest it dates to the early 1970s. It is made of metal leaves torch-cut from patinated brass and assembled using wire to form the stems and stamens of the flowers.
Mounted on burl wood, possibly driftwood, which beautifully supports the natural character of the flowers, as if they're growing from a crevice in a rock. It's a lovely sculpture to sit somewhere close to light and seating, where it can be appreciated in it's intricacy.

Monumental Signed Shunichi Inoue White and Rose Ash Glazed Vase 1978
By Shunichi Inoue
Located in Melbourne, AU
An exceptional example of the work of master Japanese potter, Shunichi Inoue. This vessel dates from his Australian residency and is signed and dated 1978.
There is potency in this very simple form - it has a powerful Cynthian presence, stillness, composure, that is, it is reminiscent of the calm abiding presence of the moon.
Shunichi Inoue studied ceramics at Kyoto City University of Arts 1969-75. He travelled to Australia to lecturer in ceramics at the Bendigo College of Advanced Education in Victoria, Australia where he stayed for three years.
He returned to Australia in late 1984 as a visiting professor and again in 1993, when he made an extended stay.
He was an active exhibitor and had an important influence on Australian pottery...
