About the Item

A well-known Canadian sculptor, Alice Winant (nee Czitron) Quebec, Canada/ Romania 1928-1989, unique sterling 925 sculpture of an old bearded fisherman sitting on a stump, holding a fish. Hand signed sterling plaque on wood base A. Winant, back of sculpture impressed with 925 / sterling. Hard to know how many ounces of silver were used, I'm sure sculpture is partial weighted. Sculpture is in fine condition, no damage. Base is 5" x 8" x 3" H. Short Bio from Ask Art: Canadian sculptor, Alice Winant (nee Czitron) was born in Targu Mures, Romania. Near the end of World War II (1944 - 1945), she was imprisoned in Dachau, Germany; Bergen-Belsen, Germany; and Auschwitz, Poland. After the war she lived in Stockholm, Sweden for seven years (1946 - 1953) and studied under Swedish sculpture Carl Helbig . She immigrated to Montreal, Quebec in 1953, where she lived the rest of her life and died Her mediums were bronze, ceramics, wax, wood, plaster, and photography. Her best known subjects were portraits and figures of women and children; she also did abstract works. Her styles could be described as Realism*, Fauvism*, Naïve Art*, Abstraction* and Modernism*.
