About the Item

Caryatid — France, 2024 Rust-patinated steel and antique stone Unique piece, signed on the back Michel Froment (born in 1951) is a distinctive figure in twentieth-century French design and sculpture, recognized for his creations that bridge Neo-Pop and Brutalist aesthetics. Following his iconic “fried eggs” in polyurethane resin—now emblematic of 1980s design—the artist continues his exploration of materiality and the reinterpretation of historical forms. This reimagined caryatid, a monumental and unique work, fully embodies the Brutalist aesthetic that defines Froment’s practice. The artist powerfully combines a seventeenth-century caryatid in antique stone with a rust-patinated steel structure reinforced by chains and industrial metal elements. This dialogue between past and modernity gives the sculpture a striking intensity: antiquity meets raw matter, grace encounters strength. At once sculpture and installation, this piece challenges aesthetic conventions and questions the relationship between art, design, and architecture. Through this artistic gesture, Froment transcends time and transforms a fragment of history into a total work of art—grand, bold, and profoundly contemporary. A second sculpture by the artist, representing a bust of Mars, god of war, is also available and pairs harmoniously with this caryatid, creating an exceptional duo within a contemporary interior or a curated design art collection. Michel Froment’s works, highly sought after by collectors, have been featured in numerous public auctions (26 recorded to date), notably with Enchères Rhône Alpes (ERA) and major French auction houses. Signed by the artist. France, 2025. Unique piece.
