FALL INTO SIN
"Sin and the fall into sin is an issue that is present in every day of human existence, specifically in every decision. Temperance and the pursuit of it is a concept worth addressing and drawing attention to, whether through art or simple conversation. My first work that dealt with the dilemma of punishment was the BLATANS series in 2019, which consisted of three glass heads where I experimented with different degrees of transparency. The formulation of allegorical figures of sins came after that, I saw clearly that I wanted to create torsos that become what they are through posture, highlighting body parts, incorporating a symbolic system of colours.
There is an interesting duality in the torso as a sculptural genre, born basically from destruction and degradation, but I think of them here more as evolving human hands, which develop in a biomorphic formal sprawl. How does material choice come together with sin? Glass is one of the most beautiful materials I know, it has the potential for transparency, which can express extra meanings, as in the case of the internal mould casting technique. Add to its beauty the biomorphic form and you have a seductive, attractive look, plus the undulation of concave and convex surfaces creates a distorting effect. I think that’s what sins are, allegorical shapes that seduce and deform. "
ARTIST STATEMENT
Stella Koleszár graduated in 2016 from the Department of Drawing and Art History in Szeged with a degree in visual representation, then in 2019 from the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design as a glass design artist. The main media of her creative practice are glass and paper-based works, whose starting point is the instinctiveness of drawing. In her glass pieces, she explores themes such as allegorical interpretations of sin and the Fall, as well as symbolic phenomena related to myths and fairy tales, which range from the personal to the universal. In her collages, she is interested in the happenings of the plant world and in questions concerning the human-centred perception of weeds. In 2020, she was an artist-in-residence in Salzburg, supported by the Budapest Gallery. In 2023, she received the Elle Deco EDIDA Young Talent of the Year award. In 2024, she represented Hungary as a glass artist at the international glass art symposium in Jablonec nad Nisou, Czech Republic, organized under the auspices of UNESCO. Alongside her individual artistic practice, she also participates in community projects in the field of street art under the name Muralinas.
