About the Item

“Charity”, bronze, 19th century French School. Signed Paul Dubois (France, 1829-1905), with founder marks (F. Barbedienne). Paul Dubois was an artist of received a great recognition in life, especially for his sculptures of small size, so appreciated that his "editors" made a remarkable amount to sell them to the upper class. He studied art at the National School of Fine Arts in Paris, and went to Rome at the end (1859). He received two first medals at the Salon de Paris in 1863, announcing the success that would come, especially since his return to Paris and his Medal of Honor in the Salon of 1865. His artistic success (as a sculptor and, also, in the field of painting, especially as a portraitist) was accompanied by a series of social recognitions, including the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor of France (which he received in 1889). His work includes numerous private collections from around the world and institutions such as the Musée Fabre in Montpellier, the Musée d'Orsay (in 1865 the "Chanteur florentine du XVe siècle", another highly reproduced work), the Petit Palais in Paris, etc. The present work is a bronze made to a size much smaller than the master's original. In the Cathedral of Saint Peter and Saint Paul of Nantes (France), is the Cenotaph of Lamoricière, work of Louis Boitte with bronze sculptures by Paul Dubois, inaugurated in 1879. These seated sculptures, made in black patinated bronze so that contrast with the white marble of the rest of the work, show several Virtues (The Faith, Courage or Warrior Force - "the Force Guerrière" -, Universal Charity and Wisdom), works that caught the attention of the experts when it was installed the play. Universal Charity appears seated, looking down and with two children in her arms (one with European features and another, suckling, with a certain African air). Weight: 32.8 kg.
