About the Item

Huge “Young Lady with Gazelle” by Charles-Georges Barberis, France, 1936 – Art Deco Terracotta Masterpiece An extraordinary and extremely rare French Art Deco terracotta sculpture by Charles-Georges Barberis, created in 1936. This monumental piece, titled “Young Lady with Gazelle,” features a highly stylized, elongated silhouette emblematic of the strongest Art Deco aesthetics—graceful, dynamic, and powerfully architectural. A true masterpiece of French 1930s sculpture. This impressive work stands an imposing: • Height: 29.7" (75.5 cm) • Width: 17.5" (44.5 cm) • Weight: 27.8 lbs (12.6 kg) Signature: Signed “C. Barberis” on the base (see photo). This very sculpture was exhibited during the French Heritage Days (Journées du Patrimoine) on September 17–18, 2002, in an exhibition exclusively dedicated to Barberis at the Prieuré de Lavaray, a historic monument near Tours. Pieces by Barberis are extremely rare on the market—both because of his limited production and his financial independence, which meant he rarely needed to sell his works. About Charles-Georges Barberis (1888–1980) Charles-Georges Barberis, born in Paris on January 1, 1888, and deceased on March 10, 1980, was a distinguished French sculptor of the early 20th century. At age 17, he entered the École des Beaux-Arts, where he studied under the renowned sculptors Injalbert and Peter, acquiring the strict discipline of Neo-Classical Greek aesthetics. His early excellence earned him both the Lemaire Prize and the Chenevard Prize. Beginning in 1913, Barberis exhibited at prestigious Parisian institutions including the Salon des Artistes Français, the Salon d’Automne, and the Société Coloniale des Artistes Français. Decorated with the Croix de Guerre for his wartime service, he witnessed the fall of Tsarist Russia and, in 1922, received a travel grant from the General Government of Madagascar. He spent four years there—deeply inspired by the landscapes and cultures of the island—producing several significant works, such as The Water Carrier, the bust of the young Ramatou (1928), and the Memorial of Antananarivo. Upon returning to France in 1927, Barberis participated in the International Colonial Exhibition. Architect Albert Laprade later commissioned him to execute the monumental relief adorning the façade of the Museum of the Colonies (1931). In 1935, he completed the Lake Anosy Memorial in Madagascar, crowned by a “Winged Victory,” whose dynamic form reflects the influence of Antoine Bourdelle. Throughout his career, Barberis produced several notable public sculptures, including: • Gliding, Palais de l’Aviation • Statue of General Leclerc, Meudon-Bellevue • Monument to Alfred Grandidier, Tsimbazaza Park, Antananarivo • Memorial of Saint-Germain-en-Laye A respected figure in the French art world, Barberis served as a jury member and committee member of the Salon des Artistes Français, receiving its Grand Medal of Honor. He was also associated with the Salon des Territoires d’Outre-Mer, won the Gold Medal at the 1937 International Exhibition, was a member of the Association of Sculptors, and belonged to the Malagasy Academy. On April 7, 1958, he was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Overseas Sciences. Among his most important works are “Ramatou the Fountain” (1928), “Combat” (1929), “Child in Cap” (1932), and the present masterpiece, “Young Lady with Gazelle” (1936).
