Pair of Chinese Export Porcelain Figures of Shouxing, God of Longevity Qianlong Period, Circa 1775 This charming pair of porcelain figures represents one of the most important and recognizable deities in the Chinese pantheon, created during the golden age of the China Trade for the fascination of the West. Description and Iconography These two vibrant figures, though representing the same subject, are individually modeled, giving each a unique character. They depict Shouxing, the Daoist God of Longevity. His most prominent feature is his high, domed forehead, a symbol of the wisdom and knowledge accumulated over a long life. Each figure stands on a green, shaped base, wearing a long green jacket decorated with auspicious plants and butterflies (symbols of joy and summer). They wear yellow aprons, and their cuffs are painted in contrasting red and blue. In his right hand, each figure holds a long staff, a symbol of his age and travels, and on his left shoulder rests a peach. This is no ordinary fruit; it is the Peach of Immortality, the primary emblem of longevity in Chinese culture. Historical Background Context 🧐 Shouxing and the Three Star Gods: Shouxing is one of the three Sanxing, or Star Gods, who are central figures in Chinese folk religion. The others are Fuxing (God of Fortune) and Luxing (God of Prosperity). Together, these three deities represent the most fundamental aspirations of a good life: longevity, happiness, and wealth. Images of Shouxing were traditionally given as birthday gifts to honor the elderly and wish them a long life. The China Trade Context: Produced in Jingdezhen during the prosperous Qianlong period (c. 1775), figures like these were highly sought-after export items. While the Western merchants and collectors who bought them may not have fully understood the deep Daoist symbolism, they were captivated by the exotic forms, brilliant colors, and whimsical charm of such "pagods" or "magots," as they were often called. These figures became essential decorative objects in the fashionable Chinoserie interiors of grand European and American homes, serving as a tangible connection to the distant and romanticized vision of China.
