Signature on base.
A bronze sculpture depicts a lion walking with its mouth open, flanked by a semi-nude child wearing a helmet and a strap over his shoulder to hold a quiver of arrows (identifying him as Cupid, the deity of classical mythology associated with love and son of Venus). The surname “Ferville Suan” is engraved in one corner of the rectangular base. Charles Georges Ferville Suan, the adopted son of the painter Charles Suan, was a French sculptor who trained at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris under François Jouffroy. Well-known for his medallions and small statuettes in marble, plaster, or bronze, he exhibited his work at the Paris Salon between 1872 and 1909.
