Impressive and highly stylish early 20th-century carved wooden bear sculpture with brass bowl.
This impressive and highly stylish early 20th-century carved wooden bear sculpture is a fine example of North-West European applied art, most likely originating from the Netherlands and dating to circa 1915–1930.
The artist who hand-carved this wonderfully stylized seated bear has masterfully captured both strength and calm in its posture. Rather than striving for naturalistic detail, the sculptor chose to emphasize powerful simplified forms, allowing the mass of the animal to speak for itself. The deliberately visible chisel marks enhance the sculptural character and place this work firmly within the aesthetic of early Art Deco and Expressionist wood carving.
The bear is seated in a contemplative pose and holds an original brass inset bowl, suggesting a functional purpose, possibly as an ashtray or small receptacle, yet the object clearly transcends pure utility. Like the best examples of applied Art from this period, function and sculpture are seamlessly united into a single, harmonious design.
This sculpture is carved from solid hardwood and has developed a rich, warm patina over time.
