About the Item

An impressive antique English Georgian Prattware pottery figure of Charity dating from around 1790. The lightly potted figure stands raised on a square pedestal base with a sculpted edge of stylised acanthas leaves. The figure of a lady is dressed in a full-length robe with a hanging cloak worn over her head. She holds a baby wrapped in a cloth in her arm with two further children standing alongside, one underneath her cloak and the other looking sideways. The figure is hand painted in typical Prattware style in simplistic patterns and reserved tones against a white pearlware ground. The figure has old collectors’ labels to the base and is typically not marked. There were a number of variants produced of the Charity figure between 1790 and 1830 although this early variant is less detailed and more naively painted than later versions. Provenance: Acquired in the UK Art Market In good original and presentable condition with a typical few firing cracks and flaws in the making.
