About the Item
This unusual Chokwe mask is probably Katoyo, representing non-Chokwe individuals. The deviation of the mask from the more common Chokwe masks is mainly because they represent Portuguese or European features: a long European-like angular face; a sharp, aquiline nose; rectangular, pierced eyes; an open mouth; small, squarish ears; and a rounded, protruding forehead. These masks would have been utilized alongside the better-known Chokwe masks in initiations and funerary contexts and were worn by performers who would ridicule Europeans for what was seen as their awkward behaviour- an early Chokwe response to colonization. The head covering has been refixed.
