About the Item
This finely carved wooden cherub head, dating back to around 1800, is a remarkable example of German craftsmanship. Unlike many similar pieces, this putto remains in its original, unpainted state, allowing the natural beauty of the wood and the delicate carving to shine. The most striking feature is its incredibly lifelike glass eyes, which add an astonishing depth and expressiveness to the piece. What makes this cherub truly unique is its unintentionally humorous expression, giving it a charming and slightly mischievous character. Its elongated shape makes it particularly well-suited for placement above a doorway or bed, where it can serve as both a decorative and symbolic element. A rare and captivating piece that brings historical charm and a touch of whimsy to any interior.

“Wooden shrine heads were permitted to sit on the altars of chiefs and important figures, in contrast to the copper alloy heads used exclusively by the kings of Benin. (Frederic Backlar, Bonhams, New York, 2012, lot 172)
Osemwede (reigned 1816-1848) was the first Oba to decree that human heads could be carved for the altars of chiefs of royal lineage, rather than just wooden antelope and perhaps goat heads. Therefore, chiefs of blood enjoyed in Benin City (but not throughout the Kingdom of Benin, where antelope heads continued to be placed on the altars of their ancestors well into the 20s. Iron Nutcracker in the Shape of a Cockatoo, 19th Century, Poland
Located in Hamburg, DE
This rare and whimsical 19th-century nutcracker from Poland is crafted from solid cast iron and takes the form of a stylized cockatoo. A nut can be placed in the bird’s beak to be cracked, while a second functional element is integrated into the center of the body – making it a playful yet practical object. The detailed shaping of the feathers and the expressive form reflect the fine craftsmanship of the period and lend the piece a sculptural quality that elevates it far beyond a mere kitchen tool.
Nutcracker collecting is a rich and varied field within the world of antiques. While the brightly painted wooden figures from the Erzgebirge are widely known, earlier examples were often made of metal and featured imaginative animal or human forms. Iron nutcrackers...
