About the Item

A French 19th century patinated Bronze and black Belgian marble statue signed by Schoenewerk and Marchand. The statue is raised on an oval Black Belgium marble base with double mottled edge top. Above is a young maiden wearing a classical dress having one knee to the ground picking flowers with her draped in a way to be able to collect the flowers. The young maiden has her hair tied back in a bun and wearing a lovely band of flowers. Besides her is a weaved basket full of flowers. Wonderful and crisp detail with a beautiful original and warm patina throughout. Signed by the artist Pierre-Alexandre Schoenewerk (1820-1885) and cast by Léon Marchand (1831-1899).

French late 19th century spelter sculpture by Hippolyte Moreau fitted with original 1 7/8" thick rouge griotte marble base. Hippolyte was one of the famous Moreau brothers, all of whom were sculptors. He was born in Dijon France in 1832 and died in 1927. This statue, in a warm chocolate brown patina depicts a diaphanously dressed woman with flowing scarf overhead and winged cherob at her side resting on the crest of a wave and shell. Hippolyte Moreau exhibited in the Salon des Artistes Français at the turn of the century and won a medal at the Universal Exposition in 1878 and another at the 1900 World Expo.
