About the Item

A wonderful and high quality French 19th century Verdigris Bronze, Ormolu and marble statue of the Winged Victory of Samothrace. This stunning statue is raised on a Vert de Patricia marble pedestal supported on Ormolu corner risers with a Rais de Coeur design. Above is the square tapered Vert de Patricia marble column with a central Ormolu mount of a torch with the eternal flame. The torch is surrounded by a laurel wreath tied with a ribbon. At the top is a square block decorated by an Ormolu band with Palmette designs all below a triple wreath mount with olive branches, which is a symbol of peace. The impressive statue above is modeled after the original circa 190 BCE sculpture that was discovered on the island of Samothrace in 1863. The original statue is now displayed at the Louvre, with this model being raised on a square Verdigris Bronze base. This statue represents the Goddess Nike, whose head and arms are missing. She stands proudly with her dress billowing in the wind and open wings swelling with air. Wonderful and rich patination throughout.
