About the Item
A handsome and most impressive French 19th century Neo-Classical st. Grand Tour Period Ormolu, patinated Bronze and Black Belgian marble statue of the Luxor Obelisk. This exceptional piece is modeled after the obelisk in the Place de la Concorde, Paris. The Ormolu obelisk, with Egyptian hieroglyphics, is raised by a Black Belgium marble base with a patinated Bronze balustrade surrounding the obelisk.
Muhammad Ali Pasha, Egypts ruler, presented the obelisk to France as a diplomatic gift. This gesture was meant to solidify Franco-Egyptian relations at a time when France, following Napoleon’s Egyptian campaign, was deeply fascinated with Egyptian antiquity and eager to assert its cultural prestige. The obelisk was transported with immense difficulty—requiring a specially built ship—and finally erected in Place de la Concorde on October 25, 1836, during the reign of King Louis-Philippe (1830–1848).
