About the Item

French Art Deco Ceramic Sculpture by Berlot-Mussier (ODYV), Vierzon, France, 1920s. This elegant French Art Deco ceramic sculpture was produced by Berlot-Mussier (ODYV) in Vierzon, France, during the late 1920s–1930s. The sculpture depicts a young lady among flowers, rendered in a refined crackle glaze ceramic with soft, nuanced coloration, strongly evocative of the style of René Buthaud, one of the great masters of French Art Deco ceramics. The composition combines graceful figuration with stylized floral motifs, perfectly illustrating the Art Deco emphasis on simplified, geometric forms balanced by poetic elegance. The delicate crackle glaze enhances the surface with depth and subtle texture, while the harmonious palette reflects the sophisticated decorative taste of the period. The piece is marked “ODYV” under the base (see photo), confirming its origin. ODYV was the Art Deco line created by the Berlot-Mussier manufactory, founded in 1927. Initially producing porcelain, the company soon specialized in earthenware and achieved notable success with its customizable Art Deco creations. ODYV objects—produced between 1929 and 1939—included sculptures, clocks, vases, lamp bases, and decorative pieces, often made to order with customer-selected colors and finishes. Berlot-Mussier played a significant role in the French decorative arts scene between the wars, with strong export activity, particularly to North Africa. The history of the manufactory is documented in a reference book published in 2007 by the Charles VII Museum of Mehun-sur-Yèvre. A refined and collectible example of French Art Deco ceramic sculpture, ideal for collectors of ODYV, René Buthaud–inspired works, or high-quality interwar French decorative arts.
