Artist Biography – Louis Riché (1877–1949)
Louis Riché was a prominent French sculptor, born in 1877 and active throughout the first half of the 20th century. A student of the celebrated animal sculptor Georges Gardet, Riché made his exhibition debut at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris in 1896, at just nineteen years old.
Riché became particularly renowned for his animal sculptures, especially dogs, cats, and other felines, rendered with remarkable naturalism, vitality, and anatomical precision. He exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français, except during the two World Wars, and gained wide recognition for his expressive yet refined style.
Throughout his career, Louis Riché worked in a wide range of materials, including marble, wax, ceramic, bronze, ivory, and occasionally silver. His bronze works were often cast in collaboration with the esteemed Thiébault Frères foundry, further attesting to the quality and prestige of his production.
Today, Louis Riché is considered one of the most important French animal sculptors of the Art Deco period, and his works are highly sought after by collectors worldwide.

Louis Riché
Louis Riché is perhaps best known for his portrayal of the Alsatian, with a large series of figures capturing the personality and gait of the canine. A prolific Animalier, Riché studied under sculptor Georges Gardet and started exhibiting at Salon 1896, where he continued to exhibit regularly, though pausing from exhibitions during both World Wars. While a large portion of his work was cast with Thiebaut Frères, he partnered with numerous major foundries of the era, including Colin et Cie, Jollet et Cie, Risler et Carré and Societe des Bronzes.
