The sculpture reflects the elegance and strength characteristic of early Art Deco aesthetics, while maintaining the sculptor’s deep attachment to realism and anatomical accuracy. The rich glaze enhances the depth and vibrancy of the piece, giving it a strong decorative presence. The work is signed “L. Riché” on the base (see photo), confirming its authenticity. (27.5 cm) Condition: Very good vintage condition, with minor age-related wear consistent with early 20th-century glazed terracotta sculptures. A museum-quality example of French Art Deco figural sculpture, highly desirable for collectors of animal sculpture, Art Deco ceramics, and signed works by Louis Riché. Artist Biography – Louis Riché (1877–1949) Louis Riché was a prominent French sculptor, born in 1877 and active throughout the first half of the 20th century. A student of the celebrated animal sculptor Georges Gardet, Riché made his exhibition debut at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris in 1896, at just nineteen years old. Riché became particularly renowned for his animal sculptures, especially dogs, cats, and other felines, rendered with remarkable naturalism, vitality, and anatomical precision. He exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français, except during the two World Wars, and gained wide recognition for his expressive yet refined style. Throughout his career, Louis Riché worked in a wide range of materials, including marble, wax, ceramic, bronze, ivory, and occasionally silver. His bronze works were often cast in collaboration with the esteemed Thiébault Frères foundry, further attesting to the quality and prestige of his production. Today, Louis Riché is considered one of the most important French animal sculptors of the Art Deco period, and his works are highly sought after by collectors worldwide.
