About the Item
This early 19th-century bronze sculpture of a "Wounded Amazon" is a refined reproduction after the original cast by Ferdinand Barbedienne. It bears the inscription “Reduction Mécanique A. Collas,” indicating that it was produced using the celebrated mechanical reduction process developed by Achille Collas.
Achille Collas (Paris, February 21, 1795 – Paris, March 3, 1859) was a French engineer, engraver, and illustrator whose innovations transformed the reproduction of sculpture. His mechanical reduction device—capable of translating full-scale works into precise miniature copies—gained immense success in the 19th century and enabled the widespread circulation of sculptural masterpieces in bronze and other media.
