About the Item

A stunning and extremely high quality French mid 19th century Alabaster statue of Cupid and Psyche. The statue after a model by Antonio Canova is raised by a wonderfully executed ground designed base where Cupid is reviving Psyche who was put to sleep by inhaling a magical perfume. She is draped in a richly sculpted flowing garment the intricately detailed Cupid coming to her aid. The original statue by Antonio Canova (1757-1822) is still currently displayed at the Louvre museum in Paris. It is as much an allusion to the legend of Psyche, the immortal soul of platonic myth, as it is a hymn to love.
