About the Item
Powerful and moving, this depiction of a nude male gladiator, laying his sword to the ground with his shield behind him, is a beautiful memorial celebrating the end of World War II, 1947. The Belgian sculptor -- Pierre Theunis -- captures the physique and musculature of the male figure with great sensitivity, and he finished the terra cotta with a thin, white wash which gives it an antique appearance. Theunis is best known for his figural sculptures in bronze and marble. This sculpture, to our knowledge, is the only extant example.
